![]() She's still an interesting, layered character who is a joy to learn about and interact with, but the way Mass Effect 2 handles her first moments is almost disrespectful. Jack excels at crowd control, not in pure damage output as her introduction implies.īetween the flat attempt at a shocking gender reveal that really doesn't hold up in 2021 to an over-the-top sequence that goes too far in building up her power, Jack's introduction does her a disservice. ![]() Biotics are powerful, and she's a very powerful experiment, but the sequence hypes her up so much that it's ultimately a let down when the player finally uses her on their squad. It's then implied that Jack is destroying entire blocks of the prison ship, which also doesn't feel plausible. RELATED: Mass Effect 2: How to Earn Garrus' Loyalty The sequence begins with her taking out YMIR mechs without any effort, yet in gameplay, she's possibly the weakest character to fight against them as biotic powers do little to nothing against their shields. The power Jack exhibits in these cutscenes is not realistic within the confines of the game's logic. While she is hyped up by the game to be this immensely powerful character, these moments fall flat in retrospect. She breaks free from her bonds and uses her biotic powers to great effect, taking out huge mechs and even crashing through walls to wreak havoc on the prison. Once freed from her cryogenic chamber, Jack understandably goes on a rampage. Weak gender reveal aside, there is another problem with Jack's recruitment mission. The lengths that the dialogue goes to obfuscate Jack's gender is immersion-breaking, and it's not something that happens with the other recruits. While this may have some shock value for first-time players, especially since "Jack" is traditionally a male name, playing through this section of the game can be a bit jarring for returning players. RELATED: Mass Effect: Legendary Edition Fixes the Trilogy's Most EMBARRASSING Moment Jack is (inexplicably) almost naked from the waist up, showing off tattoos and as much skin as BioWare could get away with. Mass Effect 2 obviously wanted her gender to shock to the player, and augments this with her general appearance. At no point is Jack's gender revealed to the player, as she's always referred to as "the convict" or "the subject" - even the dossier goes to great lengths to hide her identity.
