"You build a fab, fab will not come online two year or three years from now. "We are not currently the 40 nm node" said Kevin Zhang, senior vice president of business development at TSMC. And, in an effort to consolidate production of these chips around fewer and more widely available/expandable production lines, TSMC would like to get customers using old nodes on to the 28nm generation. As the final (viable) generation of TSMC's classic, pre-FinFET manufacturing processes, 28nm is being positioned as the new sweet spot for producing simple, low-cost chips. This is why TSMC's plan to expand production capacity for mature and specialized nodes by 50% is focused on 28nm-capable fabs. Which is to say that there isn't the profitability (or even the equipment) to build new capacity for such old nodes. But the cheap wafer prices for these nodes comes from the fact that they were once, long ago, leading-edge nodes themselves, and that their construction costs were paid off by the high prices that a cutting-edge process can fetch. Mature nodes are cheap, have high yields, and offer sufficient performance for simplistic devices like power management ICs (PMICs). For other foundries, the share of revenue earned on mature process technologies is higher: UMC gets 80% of its revenue on 40 nm higher nodes, whereas 81.4% of SMIC's revenue come from outdated processes. Nowadays TSMC earns around 25% of its revenue by making hundreds of millions of chips using 40 nm and larger nodes. As a result, TSMC has recently begun strongly encouraging its customers on its oldest (and least dense) nodes to migrate some of their mature designs to its 28 nm-class process technologies. But on the manufacturing side of matters there's a hard bottleneck to further growth: all of the capacity for old nodes that will ever be built has been built – and they won't be building any more. On the execution side of matters, those chips still do their jobs as perfectly as the day the first chip was fabbed which is why product manufacturers keep building more and more using them. We tend to discuss leading-edge nodes and the most advanced chips made using them, but there are thousands of chip designs developed years ago that are made using what are now mature process technologies that are still widely employed by the industry. They also gave us a paper with QR codes to access audio tours for both the Drive Thru and the new Xpedition Dino exhibit from our cell phone. We stopped at the gate, had our tickets scanned by the attendant and was given a road map to the park. (In fact Google maps City View still shows that entrance sign as being there.) Now, upon entering Great Adventures there is a new entrance which is still under construction during our visit - with orange cones set up on the right immediately after the Hurricane Harbor entrance that lead us to a gravel path and a Safari Drive Thru sign. Previously, the Safari shared an entrance with Hurricane Harbor on your right as you enter the park from Route 537. I discovered the entrance to the Safari Drive Thru had been moved from where I remember it. We arrived at the park at 2PM on a Tuesday. On the day of the trip, I added an additional passenger by ordering an electronic ticket which I can display on my cell phone to the attendant at the gate. I ordered four tickets to the Safari Drive Thru online and printed them out to take to the park the next day. New to the park is the Xpedition Dino exhibit which can be combined with your Safari Drive Thru ticket for an extra fee and offers 30 life size dinosaurs complete with movements and sounds. The Safari Drive Thru is a 350 acre animal preserve with over 1,200 animals from six continents and, on a hot summer day, you can see them all from the comfort of your own air conditioned car as you drive through the park. We choose to go to Great Adventure's Safari Drive Thru in Jackson. Something exciting enough for a 10 year old but relaxing enough for an 80 year old. During our school summer break we were looking for a fun family activity close to home. That's whether they're inconceivably well-heeled gamers, or content creators not willing to go all-in on a Quadro card. In itself, however, the RTX 4090 is an excellent graphics card and will satisfy the performance cravings of every person who could ever countenance spending $1,600 on a new GPU. We're then left counting the days until Ada descends to the pricing realm of us mere mortals, which is still yet to happen despite the launch of the RTX 4070 Ti. There's no denying it is an ultra-niche ultra-enthusiast card, and that almost makes the RTX 4090 little more than a reference point for most of us PC gamers. The straight 3DMark Time Spy Extreme score is twice that of the big Ampere core, and before ray tracing or DLSS come into it, the raw silicon offers twice the 4K frame rate in Cyberpunk 2077, too. With everything turned on, with DLSS 3 and Frame Generation working its magic, the RTX 4090 is monumentally faster than the RTX 3090 that came before it. That's even before you get into the equal mix of majesty and black magic that lies behind the new DLSS 3.0 revision designed purely for Ada. And, for the most part, it makes the previous flagship card of the Ampere generation look well off the pace. This is a vast GPU that packs in 170% more transistors than even the impossibly chonk GA102 chip that powered the RTX 3090 Ti. It's unstoppable, and will stay ahead of the pack as we now know AMD's highest performance graphics card, the RX 7900 XTX, is well and truly an RTX 4080 competitor. On the one hand, it's a hell of an introduction to the sort of extreme performance Ada can deliver when given a long leash, and on the other, a slightly tone-deaf release in light of a global economic crisis that makes launching a graphics card for a tight, very loaded minority of gamers feel a bit off.īut we can't ignore it for this guide to the best GPUs around simply because, as it stands today, there's no alternative to the RTX 4090 that can get anywhere close to its performance. But it's no model, and it's no moon, this is the vanguard for the entire RTX 40-series GPU generation and our first taste of the new Ada Lovelace architecture. It looks like some semi-satirical plastic model made up to skewer GPU makers for the ever-increasing size of their cards. I've listed the specific graphics cards we recommend in different categories below, but I've also lined up the most relevant GPUs of this latest generation (with a few guest appearances by still worthwhile last-gen cards) all in order of gaming performance. And we also don't recommend Nvidia's budget GPUs right now, such as the RTX 3060, as AMD and even Intel have them roundly beat on price. We suggest avoiding the high-end RX 6950 XT and RTX 3090 Ti nowadays, as these cards are generally being pushed out by similarly priced newer options. These two Alchemist generation cards are going even cheaper today. But Intel now rules the budget game with two far more affordable graphics cards, the Arc A770 and Arc A750. Most recently, we saw AMD release its $269 RX 7600. Nvidia hasn't released a true budget GPU for the desktop yet, but its mid-range RTX 4060 Ti is out now, to a muted fanfare, with the RTX 4060 is following in July. On the other end of the market, there's not much new to write about. The RTX 4070 Ti isn't as cheap as we'd like, but at least it's more reasonable than Nvidia's finest for a perfectly 4K capable card. Then there's the RTX 4080, which is a bit too pricey for us, and the RTX 4070 Ti. Nvidia has its RTX 40-series led by the RTX 4090, and that thing really is a beast of massive proportions. For the high-end gamer, you've plenty of new cards to choose from. While some will say that they were more or less only an alphabet, I feel that is overly simplistic. This process likely took decades or even a century and went on long into the Viking Age.Īs with almost everything Old Norse, opinions are varied when it comes to runes as symbols. The Elder Futhark was replaced by the Younger Futhark around the late 8th century. There are several different systems of runes, but the most well-known are the Elder Futhark and Younger Futhark, which consist of 24 and 16 runes respectively. They were also used for divination and as a means of casting spells. Their use spans from inscriptions on small objects and talismans to carvings on runestones and other large objects and recording laws and historical events. Yes, the runes were the Vikings alphabet, but they could also be magical and used for all manner of things. The Portable Antiquities Scheme/ The Trustees of the British Museum, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons Here we will dive into some of the most well-known and iconic symbols of Norse mythology, including runes, the Helm of Awe, the Horns of Odin, the Vegvisir, the Sun wheel, Mjöllnir, the Svefnthorn, and the Valknut. Scaring your enemy, protecting from evil, or putting an adversary to sleep. In this culture, symbols held a special place and were used for all manner of things. The gods walked among them and could be invoked for help, evil spirits had to be placated, your fate was predestined and magic was all around. They also didn’t necessarily have a clear distinction between what was “real” and what was based on belief in something we would call supernatural. Instead of written stories, they had a rich storytelling tradition. The Vikings had a strong oral culture where literacy rates were likely quite low. While it’s old, they were definitely not Vikings.Īs for the Valknut, there seems to me to be a straightforward case for why the name is wrong, but the symbol is truly Viking Age. When you are my age, that is the same century as my great grandparents. The oldest descriptions of the Vegvisir are from a few manuscripts from the 19th century. The latter however is decidedly so but is named incorrectly. The former is really not associated with the Viking Age at all. Two good examples are the Vegvisir and the Valknut symbols. While some symbols are controversial because we are unsure of their true name, others might be less Viking Age than you probably believe. In saying that, my personal position is that it is important to keep an open mind when considering the origins and sources of these symbols. Others, less so, and remain both mysterious and harder to prove to be directly from the Vikings. Some of these symbols are fairly well understood or at least documented in old texts and artifacts. Before diving into discussing the symbols in this list I want to make a couple of points. That said, you can use the SteelSeries GG software to reprogram any of these settings between 100 and 18,000 DPI. In terms of out-of-the-box functionality, the SteelSeries has five DPI (or CPI) settings loaded in, running at 400, 800, 1200, 2400, and 3200. This one’s only for right-handers, though it’s rather comfy and light at 80g. Unfortunately, hand preference isn’t an option. I really enjoyed the versatility of options here. Alternately, you can attach the dongle and adaptor to any USB-C to USB-A cable which is what I ended up doing. If you’re short on USB-C ports, you can also run it wireless with an included adaptor that allows you to connect the dongle to the USB-C end of the charging cable. Wirelessly, it operates on USB-C dongle, but for charging or wired use, you can also operate it with an included USB-C (connected to the mouse) to USB-A fiber-wrapped cable. Right out of the box, the SteelSeries has a pretty easy set up. Turns out, this little dynamo has every reason to be at the top of the new Prime pack. With its 20th anniversary here, SteelSeries released its latest lineup of devices featuring some of its most updated tech yet in the new Prime series, and we got our hands on a Prime Wireless gaming mouse to give it a go. Over the course of the last couple decades, the PC and console gaming peripheral brand has become quite the quality force to be reckoned with whether you’re looking for quality on the cheap or top-of-the-line innovation. It’s wild to think that SteelSeries has already been kicking around for 20 years. N, multi-layer perceptron, activation functions, loss functions, gradient descent, back-propagation).
